  About The School

School History

Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School is a rural 7th - 12th grade facility which is a part of the Orangeburg Consolidated School District Four in Orangeburg County. The current facility was completed in 1996.

Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School is a school in transition. From its inception, it provided educational opportunities to the students of the Neeses, Norway, and Springfield communities. The passing of years brought about many changes, such as the consolidating of Springfield and Norway High Schools in 1969, to forma new school - Hunter-Kinard. It was located in a building that at one time housed the former Springfield High School. The school was named in recognition of two former Superintendnets of Norway and Springfield, Mr. George Hunter and Mr. Quincy Kinard. As a result of further consolidated in the summer of 1970, the students from Norfield High School were enrolled at Hunter-Kinard High. The combined schools were housed at the former Norfield Campus. With an enlarged student body, with new challenges, with continuous zeal and dedication, and with a desire to provide a broad but flexible curriculum, the administrators, teachers, and student body combined their efforts to accomplish those goals endorsed by consolidation. The 1981-1982 school year saw a school name change - Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School. Tyler's name was added to honor the former principal of Norfield, Rev. L.M. Tyler. From 1982-1996, Hunter-Kinard-Tyler continued to be housed at the former Norfield building and was a part of Orangeburg District One. The district also included Neeses Primary School and Springfield Elementary School. In October of 1996, all students in the former Orangeburg One District were moved to the current facility. This facility accomodates grades Pre-K-12 with Hunter-Kinard-Tyler High School serving grades 7th through 12th. Due to a mandate by the South Carolina Legislature, Orangeburg District One merged with the Edisto and Branchville Districts to form Orangeburg Consolidated School District Four.
